This portrait, certainly from the basilica, were found in the rubble of the cryptoportico. They formed part of a political plan to dignify urban Aeminium and to exalt the imperial family. They date to approximately 40 A.D., about the time of the reign of the Emperor Claudius (41–51 A.D.), when it is thought that the forum was built. Agrippina the Elder, mother-in-law of the Emperor Claudius and grand-mother of Nero, appears here in a representation by a provincial artist copying a so-called ‘Capitol-Venice type’ Italian model.
