An impressive example of perfect balance and harmony, this console is profusely decorated with carved plant motifs – garlands and acanthus leaves – which intertwine with scrolls and shell shapes. The legs and stretcher are composed of C and scrolled S scrolls, the interior being filled with very fine ribbing; an urn finial sits in the intersection of the tripod. The legs are decorated with an abundance of motifs that intertwine around an imposing shell shape, introducing the decoration on the apron. A plain multiple moulding, with corners carved in semi-circles, surrounds the marble top. This is a rare creation of considerable artistic investment as it presents high quality cabinetwork and woodcarving and is entirely gilded, suggesting that it was commissioned by a highly sophisticated client, possibly from the religious sector.
