Possibly an episcopal throne, this liturgical seat would have been positioned at the high altar on top of a platform of three steps. A wide armchair with elevated back, whose curvilinear top-rail is finished with three brass finials. The arms are curved and scrolled at the ends. The uprights and the lateral and rear stretchers are turned while the front stretcher is decorated with interlaced S scrolls. The seat and back are upholstered in red damask, fringed with gold and secured by large studs. This piece makes a set with a tambouret (scabella), a portable seat for the assistant to the bishop during the liturgical ritual.
