This panel, part of a retable executed between 1570 - 1580 by Bernado Manuel, is an example of the late Mannerist style practiced in Coimbra during the transition into the 17th century and which continued throughout that century. Its origins in the late Gothic Coimbra school of this grandfather, Vicente Gil, are well evident in the distribution of the figures , the restricted space, in the dramatic poses, in the depiction of the clothing and even in the execution of the eyes. The composition continues to be divided into several planes each containing complementary narratives. To these, the painter has added a blackcloth of landscapes that include classical ruins and numerous animals, in an obvious enrichment of the composition.
