The tau-shaped crozier of the staff of St. Teotónio, Abbot of the Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, presents a decoration of plants and animals, enriched with inlaid stones and coloured glass. The shape is unusual in Portugal, although some miniatures show that it was in use until the 15th century. Other known representations include a figure leaning on a similar crozier that can be seen on a Romanesque capital in the

S. Cristovão Church of Rio Mau and the crozier of the staff belonging to the pilgrim queen, Saint Isabel.
