Originally this cylindrical reliquary from the 14th century was more richly ornamented and possessed greater symbolism, according to a description in the Cathedral inventory of 1393. Unfortunately, the piece’s structure – the base, the knot, the stem and the frontal plaques – was completely modified in the 16th century, adulterating its initial reading. However, it has been possible to achieve a better understanding of its original form and meaning by decoding the 14th century Gothic formulary that gives shape to the reliquary’s upper structure (namely the lateral plaques, decorated with the Apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul, and the cylindrical fenestrated urn surmounted by a crucifix) as well as the symbolic language of the various inventories which contain considerable information.
