An example of tomb sculpture opening the chapter of Gothic sculpture in Portugal, this is the earliest surviving iconographic record attesting to the cult dedicated to the five Franciscan martyrs. It was produced for the Mosteiro de Lorvão to hold a precious relic of these saints donated by the monarch to the Princess, Dona Sancha. Destined for a tumular recess, it is only carved on one side forming six niches to contain the five martyrs and the Moroccan king.
