Devotion to the seven Archangels marks a singular chapter in the religious history of the Counter-Reformation. The imposing and elegant figure of the Archangel
St. Michael with his symbolic attributes appears displaying his victory over the devil – the triumph of Good over Evil. Here he is shown armed and dressed in richly decorated clothing with a typically Baroque self-contained attitude, his cape billowing like an open fan. The archangel stands triumphantly over a figure rarely portrayed in Christian iconography.
