This image is unequalled in Renaissance sculpture. It depicts the Virgin of the Annunciation kneeling on a cushioned prayer stool following a model common in the 16th century, where the Virgin, surprised, looks up and raises her hand to her heart.
In some ways, this piece, attributed to the Master of the Royal Tombs, is an enigma, and many studies and theses related to its iconography and the identity of the artist have been written. Some specialists consider this piece to belong to a group with an annunciation angel that has since been lost. Others are of the opinion that a complementary figure was unnecessary as the angel is depicted on the medallion of the prayer stool.
