The re-qualification project of the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro covers two equally important complementary aspects: the adaptation of the premises to the museum programme approved in 1999 and its expansion by the construction of two new adjacent buildings.

The basic aims of the programme are to augment the space both for display of the collections and for visitor wellbeing, to increase security and ease of use of the installations, to enhance the successive architectonic features of the building in a coherent project that successfully combines patrimonial concerns with aesthetic values and the latest technical resources.

The programme, elaborated by Adília Alarcão, the Museum director at the time, and coordinated João Herdade, architect with the Division of projects and works of the Instituto Português de Museus, involved all the technical staff of the Museum.

The architectural project is the work of G. Byrne , arquitectos.
