One of the finest Portuguese quilts in the collection, embroidered in red silk thread on linen presenting a typically Baroque decorative pattern. The fringed border shows undulating branches of leaves interlaced with roses and carnations. The field is filled completely with symmetrical groups of plant and floral inter-laces, while three multilobed medallions, decorated with stylized carnations, are depicted along the central axis. From a symbolic point of view, the choice of the carnation could be associated with masculine virility, while the rose is a strong feminine characteristic. An approximation to the traditional quilts of newlyweds from Castelo Branco seems evident.
